our story

Our story begins in 1980 when our parent company, Granum Inc, started selling organic macrobiotic ingredients, including Japanese tea, to natural food stores across the country. Discovering that organic tea was missing in the natural foods market, we began selling our imported teas under the Choice Organic Teas brand, making us the first exclusively organic tea company in the U.S. Later, we purchased our first tea packing machine and expanded our offerings. The first teas we ever imported are still available today: Twig Kukicha, Bancha Hojicha, and Premium Japanese Green.

As pioneers in the industry, we are the first tea crafter in the United States to produce exclusively organic, Fair Trade Certified, and Non-GMO Project Verified teas. From classic teas and blends to sophisticated new brews that offer a twist on tradition, we’re dedicated to creating delicious organic teas. Based in Seattle, Washington, we are one of the few tea companies that packages teas in the U.S, offering more than 80 varieties of teas, herbs, and blends that honor people and the planet in every cup.

OUR PEOPLE

Experienced, creative, and diverse, our team is a committed, hard-working crew. In fact, many of us have been with the company for 10 years or more, passionately perfecting the art of crafting world-class teas. From sourcing to blending, tasting to testing, blending to packaging, we do what we do for the love of tea and the planet.

Making An Impact

We believe that there’s more to a superb cup of tea than taste alone. That’s why we’ve always crafted and sourced organic, Non-GMO Project Verified teas and ingredients and offer the most extensive assortment of Fair Trade Certified™ teas and herbs available. Our teas are as good for you as they are for the planet.

OUR VALUES

Environmentally Friendly Packaging

We use unbleached, natural fiber, staple-free tea bags, and 100% recycled paperboard printed with plant-based ink. We strive to keep packaging as biodegradable as possible, with freshness guaranteed.

Energy Conservation

We purchase renewable energy certificates to offset 100% of our emissions from our facility’s electricity usage and to support clean energy development.  We offer employees alternative transportation incentives and employ smart office lighting that automatically regulates energy use.

Commitment to Recycling

We consider sustainability in all aspects of our process; from the sourcing of raw ingredients, production and packaging, to the ability to recycle or compost the tea bags and boxes after the last sip. We recycle, reuse, or compost whenever possible.

Commitment to Community

We’re proud to partner with Seattle organizations like PCC Farmland Trust and Bastyr University to support a healthy and sustainable community.
