Organic and Fair Trade tea field in China

WUYUAN MOUNTAINS, CHINA

Da Zhang Shan Tea Garden

Situated in the famous “Golden Triangle of Tea” amidst the beautiful peaks of the Wuyuan Mountains, teas from this region have been enchanting tea drinkers for more than 1,200 years. Wuyuan teas have long been noted for their superb quality and were the preferred beverage of the Chinese emperor of the Ming-Quing Dynasties. The combination of the region’s moisture-rich soil, humid climate, and abundant vegetation makes it ideal for growing exceptional tea. Still overflowing in natural resources, the region remains unpolluted by industrialization.

Da Zhang Shan became the first member of the International Fairtrade Label Organization in China in 2001. The association, which includes farmers, technicians, and processors, focuses mostly on improving working conditions and funding children’s education. Members earn up to 20% more income from tea, allowing them to improve their practices and sell their tea at a higher price. Premiums also enabled the group to establish a microcredit program, providing family members of the cooperative with small loans.

Tea Type + Characteristics

  • Green tea: subtle, toasted flavor
  • Black tea: robust and bold
  • Oolong tea: floral, delicately sweet
